- Mural on the Canal
2011 - Mural on the Canal was a community mural project in St. Marys, OH. The location for this mural was selected by my partner, Connie Hill, and myself. Following a request from the St. Marys' City Council, we created three design options for the city to vote on. The polls were ran through The Evening Leader and on facebook. Connie and I each created an option. We then worked with Garrett Burger, a local high school student, to create the third, winning option.
This project was a result of the collaboration of many community members. Each donor, voter, participant, consultant, and volunteer was important to the final success of this project.

The St. Marys' Community Improvement Corporation, The City of St. Marys, and Minster Bank provided donations that made this project possible. The location of this project was located along the Miami-Erie canal where many other improvements were being made. Across the street from this mural, the city was building a wonderful shelter house.
Connie and I started the project by projecting the design with a donated projector from JTDMH.
Buckeye Trail hikers would often stop by to say hello as we were working. They were all impressed by the improvements made to the area. These improvements included a fresh brick walkway, colorful landscaping, an in-progress shelter house, ground that was evenly finished on the toe path, and more.
Participants often worked together. There was also a diverse age range.
Several local artists, including Nic Botkin (in the photo above) contributed their skills and expertise to working on the mural.
Several small details are spread out around the mural to add life and interest.
